Stockport Council and its teams have been shortlisted for a series of national awards.

The council is 'honoured' to have been nominated in four categories in the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) awards 2024, and to have been shortlisted for one category in the separate iNetwork Innovation awards.

The Local Government Chronicle Awards run every year at Grosvenor House, London.

Local authorities across the country nominate themselves for a category and submit a statement to the organisers on why they think they ought to win in that category.

There are 22 categories - the four for which Stockport made the shortlist are:

  • Children's Services - (Family Drug and Alcohol Court in the 'Children's Services' category)
  • Small Team of the Year - (Mayoral Development Corporation)
  • Medium Team of the Year - (Events and Hospitality Team)
  • Rising Star - (Luke Green, Head of Capital Design and Technical Services)

As well as the LGC awards, the council was also shortlisted for the iNetwork Innovation awards 2023 for their DigiKnow project. The shortlist is in the Substantial Impact Award category, and was decided by public vote.

Leader of Stockport Council, Councillor Mark Hunter, said: "This is fantastic news and acknowledges the good work taking place across our teams, services and our partners.

"Thank you to all those who have been involved in these entries for all their hard work. And I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all our entries in both finals later this year."

The LGC submission in the Children's Services category included testimonials from parents with first-hand experience of Stockport's pioneering Family Drug and Alcohol Court.

Within the service professionals and parents work together to help parents make lasting improvements in their lives. Through this collaborative approach, more children have been able to stay with their families.

One participant said: "I don't think I'd be where I am today without Family Drug and Alcohol Court."

Another stated: "I want more people to get the help that I have. It's benefitted me dramatically. It's made me a better person."

Stockport's ongoing project DigiKnow, meanwhile, aims to help people get online or improve their digital confidence and skills.

The service offers free group classes across the Stockport area, a DigiKnow helpline, and the opportunity to buy a refurbished device at a low cost from Community Computers.

The Innovation Awards ceremony takes place on 7 March, whilst the LGC finals will be held on 12 June.
