Stockport Council was among the many local institutions and figures paying tribute to music legend Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, who passed away yesterday (20 November 2025).

Born in Crumpsall and a long-time resident of Heaton Moor, the musician was made famous by his bass playing in The Stone Roses and Primal Scream.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We're deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mani yesterday, a Manchester and global music legend and a true Heatons hero.

"Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who loved his music."

Mani's skill as a musician and his warm personality were attested by all who knew him.

Richard Ashcroft of The Verve described him as "one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with".

Paul Weller, Liam Gallagher, and Mani's bandmate Ian Brown were also among those who paid tribute.
