Stockport Council has been granted an award by the Ministry of Defence, in recognition of its support for veterans.

The council was praised for its 'ongoing support' for the armed forces community, and was given a gold award in the Ministry of Defence's Employer Recognition Scheme .

The award recognised the council's work in employing veterans, and in supporting the local armed forces community as a whole - through events such as Armed Forces Day, for example.

"We are extremely proud to accept the Gold Award," said Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council.

"This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to the armed forces community. The skills and life experiences that our armed forces personnel bring to Stockport Council, our local businesses and the borough have been invaluable.

"We encourage others with similar backgrounds to consider joining our workforce as they transition to civilian life.

"We will continue to work closely with SAFCO (Stockport Armed Forces Community Organisation) and the wider armed forces community in Stockport, supporting cadet services and ensuring that all forces personnel, reservists, veterans, and their families have access to the support they need.

"Raising awareness of the armed forces support networks remains a priority Stockport Council."

Amanda Peers and Moz Perkins, speaking on behalf of SAFCO, said "We would like to offer our sincere congratulations to Stockport Council on achieving the employer's gold award. This accreditation demonstrates the hard work and commitment of the council in their continued support of the armed forces community in Stockport."

"The approach taken in Stockport to involve the armed forces community in the decision-making process is quite unique, meaning that there is continuous communication to inform and influence decisions affecting the community. Long may the good work continue for the benefit of those who have or are still serving in the armed forces and their families."
