A new tapas restaurant could be about to join the growing list of bars and eateries popping up around Stockport.
Plans for "Dos Hermanos", a new tapas bar with a two-bedroom residential apartment on the site of a former bakery, have been submitted to the council for consideration.
The development is based in a historic building at 1 Mellor Road in Cheadle Hulme and has been put forward by Stockport-based property developer Porter and Daughter.
It includes a flat roof extension on the eastern side to provide extra bar and seating space. The original building was built around 1900 and is locally listed, meaning the historic significance of the site needs to be considered in the design.
The developer is planning to retain the existing shop front proportions, introducing a new doorway and "traditional painted timber signage" to complete the entrance to the bar.
It is located just two minutes away from Chealdle Hulme railway station – so no off-street car parking is provided as part of the application as it is hoped customers will make use of public transport and other means of travel to get to the bar.
Recent development projects around Stockport have made the town a hub for independent eateries and bars, and building work on brownfield sites to create thousands of new homes means a growing number of people are expected to move to the borough in the next few years.
This includes the conversion of Lambert House, an office block in Cheadle, which is set to be turned into 98 new apartments. Closer to the town centre, restoration work in places such as the historic Underbanks continues to attract businesses to Stockport.
The building at 1 Mellor Road was previously subject to another planning application which would have seen 11 apartments built in a scheme known as Mellor Court, two of which were to be included in the former bakery.
The new build element of this design was completed and the apartments are now occupied, but the developer went bust before the bakery development could be finished. The building was then bought by Porter and Daughter after going to auction in 2023.
