Almost a millennium after Bishop Odo of Bayeux commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry to celebrate the achievements of his brother William the Conqueror, Stockport is producing a textile-based history of its own.

Local group Self Care Creatives (SCC) are presiding over the 'Sew Stockport Chronicles' project, a collaborative piece of artwork which aims to celebrate the history of the town in textile format.

On Thursday 25 January 2024, a workshop on this project will take place, open to beginners, with all material provided. This is an excellent opportunity for visitors to contribute to this remarkable project.

Stephanie and Kimberley, co-founders of SCC, will preside over the workshop.

The pair emphasise that this is a piece designed and produced by the people of Stockport, aimed at "reflecting the community values, spirit and textile history of the area".

The project has a finish date set for February 2024. It forms part of the Stockport Town of Culture programme.

When finished, the artwork will be displayed for the public in the Arc Centre, in Stockport Hat Museum.

Stephanie and Kimberley said: "We are over the moon to deliver this unique embroidered legacy artwork project [...] aiming to inspire and bring the community together with creativity.

"Through planning, designing and sewing, the participants will create a beautiful heritage and culture-centred art piece to be displayed to the public in Stockport.

"The process of the project includes planning using vision boards and stitching miniature memories of Stockport. Collaborative work is key for this project and we are working with lots of groups from a diverse range of backgrounds."

A key part of the project is to improve mental health through artistry - read more about how SCC plans to do so HERE.

If you are interested in taking part in the workshop and having a hand in producing the Stockport Chronicle, you can register HERE.

The event takes place at the Arc Centre, from 11am-1pm on Thursday 25 January 2024.
