A Stockport-based charity which supports children in Uganda is appealing for critical support this Father's Day.

Forever Friends of Uganda (FFoU), co-ordinated by Stockport resident Keith Mills, is looking for supporters who can help young children who have been abandoned by their fathers.

"I find it horrific that in our small village community around Little Angels Primary School, we have a list of 20 girls and boys who are in the sole care of very poor mothers", Keith explained. "And that is just at the infant school level.

"Every single father of these children is alive but has abandoned them.

"The pregnancies came about by rape and drug problems among other things. Some of the fathers have even refused to admit that the child is theirs - all of them ran away to the city.

"These children have no chance of decent future without support. Their mothers certainly cannot afford their education.

"The school fees are a small amount by our standards, but there is no way they can afford to pay."

And while the schools are keen to take the pupils on, ultimately, no school fees means no money to pay the teachers and fund everything else that a school needs to exist.

With these promising youngsters facing such dire circumstances, FFoU is appealing for supporters to sponsor these children and help them get a chance in life.

Among the charity's supporters is Stockport County stalwart Joseph Olowu, who is player ambassador for the charity.

"Fathers Day without a dad. It's not right is it?", he said. "But when your mum has nothing - when she can't afford for you to go to school. And when you sleep on a mud floor without a bed or mattress.

"I can't imagine it."

If you would like to help, you can contact Keith by email at [email protected].
