Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is hosting an open exhibition this summer, to celebrate the building's 100th birthday.

Named 'Beautiful Things', this special exhibition features artworks which have been submitted by talented local artists.

Painters, sculptors and designers from across the borough were asked earlier this year to submit works for this new open exhibition, which aims to celebrate the rich history of Stockport.

Having opened on Sunday 22 June, the exhibition will run until Friday 22 August.

And visitors will get the chance to vote for their favourite, with winners to be announced in August.

Councillor Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Public Protection at Stockport Council, said: "We're thrilled to celebrate the centenary of the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery with the 'Beautiful Things' exhibition. This is a wonderful opportunity for the young people of Stockport to showcase their creativity and share what they find beautiful in our community.

"Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery is a special place. Since its opening in 1925, it has been the home to many special historic moments and important memories for many people across the borough - and serves as a lasting reminder of those who lost their lives during World War I and in subsequent conflicts.

"This exhibition - as well as other activities planned to mark its centenary year - will serve as a fitting tribute to one of Stockport's most treasured landmarks."

The art gallery itself will officially turn 100 in October 2025.

It was built with funds raised by the people of Stockport in honour of those who died in the First World War. It now commemorates those who died as a result of subsequent conflicts.

As well as its role as a war memorial, the gallery was also built as a creative space, and it has hosted a huge range of exhibitions in its long history.
