Stockport has been ranked as the ninth happiest place to live in the North West in a survey by online property platform Rightmove.

The results were decided by a survey of 26,000 residents across the country. General trends revealed that residents who lived closer to rural spaces were generally happier, and that - according to Rightmove - "the most important contributors to happiness were feeling a sense of pride, belonging and community".

Kendal, Altrincham and Chorley picked up first, second and third places respectively in the North West category, whilst Richmond-upon-Thames earned the number one spot nationally.

As well as ranking in the North West's top 10, Stockport also placed in the top 100 nationally, at number 98.

Councillor Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "To be recognised as one of the happiest places for people to live in the North West is high praise indeed and reinforces the borough's deserved reputation as a great place to put down roots, especially as we celebrate being this year's Greater Manchester Town of Culture.

"We have it all in Stockport; people can access the countryside, we have great historic and cultural attractions, top class leisure facilities and our £1bn town centre regeneration programme will provide a vibrant, friendly neighbourhood with high quality new homes, modern facilities, attractive green spaces and all the benefits of the town centre nearby."
