Stockport's air quality has been deemed 'unhealthy for some groups', as smoke from nearby fires continues to blow over the area.

IQAir - a Swiss air tracking company and purifier manufacturer - found that multiple areas of Stockport including Reddish and The Heatons had air quality which was unhealthy for the oldest and youngest residents, as well as for those with respiratory conditions.

Other parts of Stockport were considered of 'moderate' air quality.

Fires at Dovestones in Saddleworth and at Tintwistle in Derbyshire are still burning, with wind blowing the smoke towards Stockport and Greater Manchester.

Local fire services have declared a 'major incident' in both cases

Although symptoms from wildfire smoke exposure are usually temporary, young children, older people and those living with an existing lung or heart condition can be more vulnerable.

As a result, Stockport NHS, Stockport Council, and Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) have all suggested residents limit their time outdoors and try to keep doors and windows closed, particularly if they fall into one of these vulnerable groups.

Stockport NHS advised people to avoid smoky areas where possible, and specifically advised vulnerable residents to stay indoors.

Stockport Council generally recommended staying inside if you can smell smoke or if visibility nearby is noticeably reduced.

GMFRS similarly said: "If smoke is affecting your area, or there is visible smoke nearby, stay indoors where possible and keep windows and doors closed to reduce smoke entering your home."

The Dovestone Reservoir fire started around 8.40pm on Saturday 11 July.

Firefighters have been working hard at the scene since then.

A 20-year-old woman was charged with aggravated arson on Tuesday (14 July) in connection with the Dovestones fire.
