Six arrests made in Stockport town centre as part of crime crackdown

Police made six arrests in Stockport town centre on Friday 27 March as part of a high-visibility deployment.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) were sent to the town centre as part of Operation Rimini, which targets crime in the town centre and surrounding areas using measures such as increased patrols and plain-clothed officers.
The patrols were aimed at 'reassuring' residents with a high-visibility police presence, and also tried to gather intelligence and 'address concerns' of residents and local businesses.
The six arrests were for offences including possession of controlled drugs, theft, failing to appear at court, assault on a retail worker, breach of criminal behaviour order, assault on an emergency worker and drink-driving.
On the day, GMP reported an uptick in residents reporting crime to officers in person, and said local businesses felt more supported.
"This engagement not only strengthened relationships but also contributed to a more accurate understanding of emerging issues within the area", a GMP spokesperson said.
Officers also carried out stop and searches and interventions based on reasonable grounds and live intelligence.
Inspector Jason Holmwood, said "This monthly intensification of resources in Stockport town centre continues to make the area a safe place for workers and people coming into Stockport. The operation has now surpassed 100 arrests and 200 stop-searches since the launch in 2023, bringing offenders to justice and showing a zero tolerance for crime in the area."
