Stockport Council has outlined plans for its new 'School Uniforms for All' scheme, which aims to make 'high quality, pre-loved school uniforms' available to families across the borough.

As part of this, the council has issued an appeal for any families with spare or unused uniforms to donate their items, provided they are in good condition.

The aim is to reduce unnecessary waste, and to help families who may be in need of support.

Uniforms can be donated at any of the following locations:

  • Any of Stockport's 16 libraries
  • Bredbury or Reddish Morrisons supermarkets
  • Disability Stockport, 23 High Street, Stockport, SK1 1EG
  • Age UK Stockport, Commonweal, 56 Wellington St, Stockport, SK1 3AQ
  • Stockport Signpost for Carers, The Heatons Centre, Thornfield Road, Stockport, SK4 3LD
  • Merseyway: a donation bin will be in place between 22 July and 5 August located outside Specsavers

The scheme will launch later in the year, once the uniforms have been collected. It will then run throughout the school year, with support from The Cherry Tree Project, a local youth community group.

Cllr Mark Roberts, deputy leader at Stockport Council, said: "We are committed to Climate Action Now and know our children want to help in any way they can. Pupils argued for action on textile waste in this year's Schools Climate Assembly.

"This is the perfect opportunity for our children and their families to get involved directly to help decrease the amount of uniforms going to waste each year. School Uniforms For All will see a co-ordinated, environmentally friendly approach to the reuse and distribution of school uniforms to children and families across Stockport."

Rachel Bresnahan from the Cherry Tree Project said: "We are so excited to be part of a project that is so close to our hearts.

"This is more than a uniform project, it's an opportunity for the community to work alongside schools, local businesses and the council to benefit the world around them, supporting each other and positively impacting the environment."
