Stockport Council is proposing the introduction of a new school street on Half Moon Lane in Offerton.

A school street involves closing the road to non-essential traffic around the school start and finish times (in this case, 8.30-9.15am and 2.45-3.45pm).

The council is currently hosting a public consultation on the proposals, which would cover St Philip's Catholic Primary School and Dial Park Primary School.

The aim of a school street is to encourage more families to walk, cycle or wheel to school, in turn promoting healthier and less pollutive journeys.

The schools themselves have submitted requests to the council for a school street to be introduced.

As part of the public consultation, the council is asking residents to share whether they agree or disagree with the proposals.

The consultation is open until Monday 6 April - give your feedback here.

The council points out that a school street could lead to less anti-social parking, less danger to children from road traffic, less damage to children's lungs from pollution, and reduced congestion on the nearby road network.

A spokesperson said: "Stockport Council is committed to making Stockport's roads safer for everyone living, working and visiting the borough and is working to create a cleaner environment that will reduce air pollution and improve the health and wellbeing of the community by encouraging more walking and cycling wherever possible."

You can read more about the proposals and / or give feedback here.

"Our engineers worked as quickly as possible to complete repairs and have now restored service to normal levels."
