A youth theatre group in Romiley will be making a high-profile appearance on BBC One this weekend.

Young performers from NK Theatre Arts will be featuring on BBC One's The National Lottery's Big Night of Musicals - it will show this Saturday, 22 March, at 6.50pm.

The programme will be showing a performance from January at the AO Arena, when 15 young performers from NK Theatre Arts took to the stage alongside students from CAPA College to deliver a breathtaking rendition of Electricity from Billy Elliot.

It earned a standing ovation from the 12,000 members of the live audience.

As well as that performance, the programme will also be showing a video segment filmed in Romiley's The Forum Theatre—the home of NK Theatre Arts.

A spokesperson for NK Theatre Arts said it represents a 'major milestone', and a 'triumphant comeback' for the organisation, which was forced to close in 2023 following new guidance around the RAAC (reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete) which existed in the building.

After £300,000 in funding from Stockport Council and 'unwavering' support from the local community, the Forum re-opened in June 2024.

NK Theatre Arts, a registered charity, is responsible for the day-to-day running of The Forum Theatre.

The airing of The Big Night of Musicals comes just four days before the opening night of Flashdance the Musical, directed by Hannah Thomas, NK Theatre Arts' Head of Musical Theatre and Dance.

Hannah also co-ordinated the company's stunning performance at the AO Arena and was interviewed by Jason Manford on the night, making this a particularly special moment for the organisation.

"This weekend is a true reflection of how far we've come," Hannah said. "To see our theatre featured on national television and then launch straight into another major production is something we could have only dreamed of a year ago."
