People in Stockport have warned of 'carnage' on the roads if new housing plans are approved.

Developer Seddon Homes hopes to build 250 properties on land at Hyde Bank Meadows in Romiley, off Gotherage Lane.

But residents have said the area is already struggling to cope with the existing levels of traffic, and that public services are under major strain.

Fears were also raised about plans to access the proposed development through an existing estate on Gotherage Lane.

Locals have set up a campaign group against Seddon Homes' plans to build in the area.

The group is named 'Stop Seddon Homes – say no to Hyde Bank Meadows development'.

Spokesperson for the group, resident Cassie Briffa, said: "We don't have the GP places or the school places, our roads in Romiley are chock-a-block as it is.

"What they're going to do is have 250 houses, let's call it 500 cars, that's going to add to this small road [Gotherage Lane] that's going through a housing estate.

"There's a lot of anger that this is going through."

The application site is made up of green fields and a children's play area on Tangshutt Fields next to an existing housing estate.

Proposals for the land include building a mix of 'affordable and market homes', which are described as being suitable for families, first-time buyers, and older residents wishing to downsize.

New play facilities are included in the blueprint for the land, as well as areas of 'open accessible space' and new grass football pitches.

A 'screening' request has been submitted to Stockport council, which is used to decide whether the application requires an assessment over its environmental impact.

Proposals show that access to the estate would be from Gotherage Lane, a residential area made up of semi-detached homes.

People living around the area told the Local Democracy Reporting Service in March that the road 'wouldn't cope' with the potential for hundreds more cars using it every day.

Cassie Briffa explained that traffic congestion is already a major issue.

She added: "It's going to be impossible, it's tight on parking as it is, it's just going to be gridlocked, and it's not safe for the kids.

"One of the wonderful things about that estate is the safety of children, it's an old school estate where kids go and knock on doors to play, all this extra traffic going down there is going to make it unbearable.

"Even for people getting out to work, the commute from Romiley to the M60 is atrocious, it can take an hour on a good day, then add in these extra cars and the delay in getting off that estate because people are going to get stuck.

"On bin day, a bin lorry trying to go down there while people are trying to get off, it's going to be carnage.

"There's no doubt that housing is needed, but not like this."

Seddon Homes is preparing to submit an initial outline planning application to the council.

It has already completed a public consultation, which closed on March 15.

A report from the developer's screening request sets out the benefits and drawbacks of the location.

The report stated: "The site is well located for sustainable travel access, benefitting from good pedestrian connections, cycle connections and access to public transport services, including Romiley rail station approximately 850m to the north-west of the site.

"The proposed development has the potential to affect the local transport network during construction and operation as a result of the increase in vehicle traffic generated during both of these phases.

"Additionally, the potential exists for the local transport network to be impacted by the cumulation of vehicle movements from the proposed development and other proposed developments."

Seddon Homes was approached for comment.
