Residents evacuated from Meadow Mill - but some Stockport roads remain closed as borough recovers from floods
Stockport is recovering following a deluge of heavy rain and floods on New Year's Day.
The borough awoke on 1 January to dramatic scenes, with road closures, flooded buildings, and surging rivers.
Meadow Mill - the converted apartment building just outside Stockport town centre - was left with a flooded car park and ground floor, leaving around 400 residents trapped without electricity and water throughout most of the day.
However, the floodwater has since cleared, and residents have been evacuated.
Most residents from Meadow Mill are staying with friends and family, and Stockport Council said it is helping other residents to find accommodation.
Nonetheless, some roads remain closed as the council and emergency services work to make areas safe and navigable again.
Stockport Council offered the following update, showing the extent of closures and openings. As of 2.43pm on Thursday 2 January:
- The A34 is now clear of floodwater; however, vehicles are awaiting removal before the road can be fully reopened to traffic.
- Hulme Hall Road is open.
- The A555 will remain closed this evening and likely tomorrow.
- The Bridge Lane entrance and exit onto the Bramhall Green roundabout are still closed due to abandoned vehicles and a collapsed manhole.
Whilst much of the floodwater has now cleared, some of the abandoned cars on the affected roads still need to be removed. Residents are therefore advised not to drive around the closures, as the cars are not illuminated.
Further still, with temperatures expected to drop tonight, priority routes will be gritted from 7 pm this evening and from 4 am tomorrow morning.
Leader of Stockport Council Cllr Mark Hunter said: "Our priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents during this challenging time.
"Teams are working around the clock alongside emergency services to assist those affected and to clear roads as quickly as possible. Please take care on the roads, avoid flooded areas, and travel cautiously. Thank you for your cooperation as we manage this ongoing situation."
