Residents asked for feedback on proposals for 175 new houses in Hazel Grove
By Leslie Kerwin 11th Feb 2026
Hazel Grove residents are being asked for their views ahead of plans to build new homes in the area.
Up to 175 new homes are hoped to be built on the land off Mill Street, behind Sainsbury's, with a full planning application expected to be submitted later this year.
The green belt land has already been earmarked for potential development in Stockport Council's Local Plan, and will become 'grey belt' land under the National Planning Policy Framework.
Current plans include up to 87 affordable homes, as well as car parking space and a children's play area. It will also include green space areas, walkways, and cycleways to encourage sustainable forms of travel.
If approved, vehicle access will only be via the traffic light junction in front of Sainsbury's, on the A6, though developers have said they will include provision for a future link road, if required.
More than 5,000 households across Hazel Grove and Offerton have been issued leaflets about the consultation, which will end on 20 March.
Cllr Dan Oliver, cabinet member for communities, culture, and public protection, said: "It's important to note that this is proposed on current greenbelt land, but it seems to have had its protections removed by Government as the developers are treating it as the new 'grey belt'. It is also listed as a potential development site on the Local Plan that we are being forced to pursue under new Government housebuilding rules.
"Please take part in the consultation. As councillors we are unable to express an opinion until it is presented to us at a formal meeting, otherwise we may lose our right to vote on whether to approve or reject the development."
Developers are calling on residents to respond to an online consultation to allow the public to shape final plans for the development.
There will also be a public drop in event at St. Peter's Parish Centre, between 4pm and 8pm on 5 March.
