Rare image of David Bowie at legendary Stockport gig resurfaces
By Alasdair Perry 28th Apr 2026
A hitherto lost photograph of rock legend David Bowie in Stockport has resurfaced.
The picture shows the iconic musician backstage at the Poco a Poco club on Manchester Road in Heaton Chapel.
Bowie played there on Monday 27 April 1970, in a gig organised by teenagers from the Stockport Schools' Students' Union.
This was the same show after which Bowie missed his train from Stockport and was forced to sleep overnight at the station in a now fabled episode in Stockport's past.
The photo was found by David Maynard (second from the left in the picture) in his loft.
It was subsequently shared by Stockport music story on Monday (27 April), to mark exactly 56 years since Bowie's famous gig.
This was then shared by the team behind David Bowie's official Facebook page.
"Every now and again a real treasure is uncovered having lain hidden for many years", a spokesperson said.
"Stockport Music Story has uncovered such a thing, a photo found by David Maynard in his loft recently, many years after the event."
