Police to target anti-social off-road bike riders

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched their annual crackdown on the dangerous riding of off-road bikes, quads and e-bikes.

Operation Hurricane will focus on known hotspots for anti-social behaviour, with previous years concentrating on areas around Adswood, Brinnington and Stockport Interchange.

GMP highlighted Stockport as one of its five 'highest risk' districts for this type of offence alongside Bolton, Oldham, Rochdale and Wigan.

Sergeant Grogan, who leads initiative, said: "It is vital that GMP has a robust and effective approach to tackling the anti-social use of off-road bikes. This is an issue that has a real impact on our communities, and we are committed to addressing it.

"As the weather improves, we typically see an increase in the use of these vehicles. In response, we will be stepping up our efforts, with more officers deployed to take action and remove these vehicles from our streets.

"We hope this increased visibility and enforcement will not only deter offending but also build public confidence and encourage communities to report incidents to us."

The force will have the help of a special operations bike unit, a drone team, traffic officers and the National Police Air Service after receiving more than 2,200 calls about e-bikes between June 2024 and July 2025.

Hazel Grove MP Lisa Smart has called for police to step up their efforts in stamping out this type of anti-social behaviour, saying: "I have been meeting with the police on a regular basis to ensure that this issue is given the attention it deserves. But we need ongoing progress.

"Unfortunately, the problem hasn't gone away, and I want to know what action the police are taking to make sure that they have taken what they learnt from the operation and embedded it with the local teams."

Natalie Dalby, Stockport's chief superintendent, added: "I look forward to seeing more being done across the area to deal with these issues. I want to see more funding to allow the police to do their job effectively; and continue a constructive dialogue with the local officers on the ground."
