Police take seven illegal and ‘dangerous’ bikes off the streets of Stockport

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) has seized seven illegal bikes across Stockport town centre.
Officers seized the 'dangerous' bikes this September as part of a crackdown on anti-social behaviour.
Police were deployed to 'hotspot' areas to target bikes that were being used in an anti-social way, or that were illegally modified.
In all, five illegal e-Bikes and two motorbikes were taken off the streets, and have been sent for destruction.
Police also targeted "individuals who abuse the gig economy", using short term-contracts and freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs.
On this basis, a further 50 bikes were checked, as well as immigration status, with all found to be compliant.

It forms part of GMP's 'Safe4Summer' operation, which has seen increased police presence across Greater Manchester from June to September.
Inspector Jason Holmwood said the initiative was about making people feel safe in the town centre.
"People should be free to walk around safely, without having to worry about modified and often dangerous e-bikes being ridden around the streets", he said.
"This operation shows our commitment to our communities to address concerns that have been raised around the misuse of illegal e-bikes and anti-social behaviour which impacts everyone's daily lives."
GMP also maintained that this was not a 'one-off' initiative.
As Insp Holmwood added: "Our officers will continue to take a proactive approach to tackling concerns from the community and ensure those riding in an anti-social manner are stopped."
