Police are looking to identify individuals responsible for a fire near Marple War Memorial on bonfire night (Wednesday 5 November).
A fire was started in a bin after some wooden pallets were set alight, leaving the ground nearby damaged.
Police were called to the scene around 9.50pm following reports of a group of males near the cenotaph.
Fortunately, emergency services extinguished the fire within minutes.
Police are working with Stockport Council to ensure the area is cleaned and restored.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) are now looking to find those involved, and are appealing to the public for any information.
Police Sergeant Rachel Walton, of the Stockport East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said; "This was a reckless act that could have ended with more damage and even serious injury. [...]
"We want to identify the individuals responsible, and we will have extra, high-visibility patrols in the park each evening leading up to the Remembrance Day service on Sunday 9 November.
"The Cenotaph means a lot to the community and incidents like this are deeply upsetting, particularly at a time when we should be honouring the memory of our war veterans."
Anyone with information is asked to contact GMP on 0161 856 9782 quoting log number 4223-051125.
The public can also contact police via 101 or via the reporting tools on our website, or by calling Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111. Always call 999 in an emergency.
