Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Stockport yesterday announced the arrest of six males in relation to attempted theft and going equipped to steal.

The arrests come following widespread concern amongst residents over theft in and around Stockport, with a number of incidents and sightings being reported on social media.

"This action has been taken following an increase in criminality in the town centre over the last week, whereby motorbikes and pedal cycles have been targeted", GMP said in a statement.

Councillor Matt Wynne of the Edgeley Community Association said on social media: "We have made it clear with GMP Stockport that getting a grip of these groups who are clearly making it known they are out equipped to steal is a policing priority as raised by the community."

The six males are all in custody waiting to be interviewed.
