Police carry out 'road safety crackdown' in Stockport
By Alasdair Perry 29th May 2026
Police have cracked down on road safety in Stockport, stopping 56 vehicles during a targeted operation in the area.
Officers from Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) Safer Transport Team were deployed to Stockport on Wednesday 20 May as part of 'Operation Considerate', a scheme designed to improve road safety.
Police looked out for potential driving offences throughout the day, which led to multiple traffic offence reports, including:
- Seven for mobile phone use
- Two for seatbelt offence
- Three for no insurance
- One referral to the Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme (VDRS) for tyre depth
- One for no MOT
- One fine for no asbestos/waste licence
Inspector Jason Holmwood, from GMP's Stockport policing team, said: "Many of the offences identified may seem minor but accidents can happen in a split second. This operation aims to highlight the small actions we can all take to stay safe.
"While enforcement remains important, education is key. Simple steps like sticking to the speed limit, putting your phone away and always wearing a seatbelt can significantly reduce the risk of serious collisions.
"Operation Considerate runs year-round across Manchester to keep our roads safe. We encourage the public to stay alert, drive responsibly and report dangerous driving through our online portal."
