Poet and rapper Antony Szmierek pens new song on Stockport Pyramid
Is Stockport Pyramid a worthy muse?
Apparently so. At least, if Antony Szmierek's new song is anything to go by.
The poet and rapper released his new single The Great Pyramid of Stockport yesterday (Thursday 3 October), with the iconic building featuring in both lyrics and imagery.
Delivered in the artist's distinct spoken word style, the Pyramid is compared with its 27th century BCE counterpart in Giza, and forms an unlikely source of inspiration.
"You get one life live it / in the valley of the kings" the chorus implores.
This is the second song - to the editor's knowledge - written about Stockport Pyramid. Alongside Julian Homer's Stockport Pyramid, released in 2023, it forms part of a very small (but now burgeoning) list of songs written about the Pyramid.
It's a niche sub-category of music, perhaps, but one which Nub News thinks is certainly worth adding to.
Antony Szmierek is a Manchester-based artist whose "spoken word songs that celebrate the beauty in the everyday".
In barely two years, Szmierek has completed a sold-out headline UK tour, made a number of top radio and TV appearances, and has been praised as one of BBC 6 Music's artists of the year.
In the words of a critic at DIY magazine, "the Manchester poet is ticking off career milestones seemingly by the minute".
The ostensible aim of the artist's music is "to let others know that this is all possible".
