The new JD store in Stockport town centre opened its doors for the first time today (Thursday 3 October).

The shop sits in the Merseyway shopping centre, on the site of the former BHS building and next to Poundland, which opened this summer.

It occupies 13,000 square feet, and features a "fresh, modern design".

JD's two existing stores in Stockport town centre have closed in line with the new opening.

There will also be some special events in-store over the ensuing few days to celebrate opening; on Friday, for example, there will be live DJ sets throughout the day. On Saturday and Sunday, meanwhile, visitors can try their hand at the Batak Challenge – a high-energy game which puts reflexes and hand to eye coordination to the test (you'll need the JD Status app to take part).

Cllr Colin MacAlister, Cabinet Member for Economy and Regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "It's fantastic to see the transformation of the old BHS building with the opening of JD and the recent opening of Poundland. This is a big step forward in our long-term plans for Merseyway, showing how we're rethinking the use of these spaces to bring new life into the town centre.

"With many department stores closing nationally, it's about more than just retail now – we're thinking outside the box to create places that inspire creativity and innovation. [...]

"The fact that we're still attracting big-name retailers, even in challenging times, says a lot about the positive momentum here."

James Air, a director at JD, said the company 'can't wait' to open the new store.

"We've always had a great connection with Stockport and the North West and are pleased to be investing in a large, state of the art store with an enhanced product range", he said.

"We're very much looking forward to welcoming everyone to our new store."

Victoria Nichol, Merseyway Centre Manager said: "The opening of the new JD store is testament to our ongoing commitment to ensure high quality retail at the centre. It's a well-loved brand in the town and we're confident our visitors will be impressed by their brand new store which will offer a fantastic shopping experience."

JD is an international sports-fashion retailer, with around 3,400 stores across 36 countries.
