Plans have been submitted for a new fire station on King Street West.

Subject to approval, the existing site in Edgeley will be demolished, and a new station, training tower and vehicle space will be built.

The new station would be slightly smaller in size, for greater 'operational efficiency' - however, it would uphold the same level of service to local communities in Stockport. Response times will neither increase nor decrease, and likewise with the number of engines. Crew size would also remain broadly similar.

The new station is expected to cost £6 million. This money has come from a £38m investment from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), to be spent across the whole fire and rescue estate in the region. As well as Stockport, new stations are planned for Bury and Blackley with the same funding package.

Speaking of the investment, chief fire officer Dave Russel said: "These plans will see decades-old buildings replaced with state-of-the-art fire stations, enabling us to maintain the cover our crews provide while increasing the energy efficiency of our estate and cutting carbon emissions.

"This is about making sure that Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is on the front foot and equipped with the tools and the facilities to carry on serving Greater Manchester."

Plans for the King Street station were in fact unveiled in summer last year, and a consultation with local residents was held in June 2023.

The new station will include state-of-the-art facilities, as well as a room which local community groups and organisations can use.

It will also use sustainable heating and light systems, which will contribute to Greater Manchester's goal of carbon neutrality by 2038.

A transport report suggested that the new station "would not have a significant or severe residual impact on the surrounding highway network".

Deputy Mayor of Greater Manchester Kate Green said: "People across Greater Manchester deserve the very best service that our firefighters can deliver, and these plans are all about giving them the facilities and the resources to get on with the job of protecting communities in Stockport."

A decision on the plans is expected at the end of April. Read more about the proposals HERE.
