Plans have been submitted for a new drive-thru Burger King opposite Portwood Retail Park.

The new restaurant would be built on currently vacant land, formerly the site of Carpet Right.

If approved, it would be the only Burger King in Stockport, given that former branches have since closed, and the closest sites are now in Manchester city centre.

Plans were submitted last month. The proposal includes 24 car parking spaces, and three electric vehicle charging bays. The site would be 'highly accessible', both to local residents and to visitors from the M60.

The building would occupy a footprint of 232 square metres, and would be a single storey in height. The total site floorspace would be around 1,600 square metres.

Arguing the case for approval of the new restaurant, the applicant states that the site will create new jobs, enhance consumer choice, and "improve the appearance of the local area".

The applicant, Morbaine, argues that the new fast food restaurant "will result in additional local choice in respect of food and drink provision and will allow the sustainable redevelopment of a former commercial site in a key brownfield location."

The applicant adds that the aim is to: "create a modern, sympathetic and exciting addition to the local area with a combination of high quality design and materials."

Burger King operates more than 500 restaurants across the UK. These plans come following a drive from the fast food chain to open more sites across the UK.

Revenue for the company was up 39% in 2022.

The last date for making comments on this application is 30 January, with a determination deadline set for 5 February.
