Plans have been submitted for a new Asda Express store in Offerton.

The shop would be built on the site of the Marple Road Garage at 22 Marple Road, near the junction with Chippenham Avenue.

The garage and MOT centre would be demolished, to make way for the new shop. Also, 10 parking spaces would be provided on the site.

Proposed opening times for the new Asda are 6am-11pm.

In their planning statement, the applicant argued that the shop would aim to provide a solution to what they perceive as a 'distinct lack' of convenience shops in the area.

"It is evident that there is a distinct lack of local 'top up' convenience retailing within the locality", they said: "Thus the proposal will satisfy a local need, allowing easier access for local residents."

The applicant also maintained that the new Asda would not harm other local businesses in the vicinity, and they also stated that an estimated 17 new full-time jobs would be created as a result.

"The majority of trade will be drawn from residents that live within the locality", the applicant said.

"It has been demonstrated that the proposal will not impact upon the vitality or viability of any existing centres within the five and 10 minute walking catchment of the development."

The design of the building itself would be 'modern', with a shop front facing Marple Road.

The applicant has also said that there will be landscaping around the boundaries of the site to "act as a buffer between the development and adjoining neighbours".

A decision on the plans is expected in June 2025.
