Residents are worried that new housing plans could cause traffic chaos in their village.

House builder Seddon Homes has shared proposals for 250 properties on land at Hyde Bank Meadows in Romiley.

The developer said it is preparing to submit a planning application to Stockport Council for the scheme, which would include 'a mix of affordable and market homes for families, first-time buyers, and older residents wishing to downsize'.

Around half the houses could be at affordable rates according to the developer's website, which means they would be priced below market rates.

The land is part of Stockport's green belt but has been identified in the council's draft local plan as a site which could be released for development.

But people living in Romiley around the narrow Gotherage Lane next to the land said they are worried the proposals could change the character of the village forever.

Mark Marchington, 48, said: "I don't think it's a good idea, I don't see where all the doctors and schools are coming from, surely there are better sites than a place which all the community use?

"It could end up being really awkward for everyone, hundreds of new homes and most people have a car these days, it would ruin the character of this part of Romiley."

Another resident living near the park, 43-year-old Vitalii, said: "The majority of people around here are against it, I'd say around 90 per cent.

"They want to build 250 houses but there are no schools in the plans or anything like that, so it would be more [pressure] loaded onto the existing facilities.

"There's also a concern about the traffic, there could be another 500 cars using this road, it wouldn't cope."

The plans could mean moving a children's playing park on Tangshutt Fields to the other side of the field away from the existing houses.

Seddon Homes stressed that Tangshutt Fields will not have 'any residential development' on it, and that the existing playing fields on the land will be upgraded.

Diane O'Connor, 70, has lived in Romiley for 60 years.

She said: "This would change our lives, the kids are playing in it, the teenagers use it, and they can all be seen from the houses.

"It's a brilliant space, it would be heartbreaking to lose it. We all need a bit of greenery in our lives."

Seddon Homes has launched a website sharing details of its plans for the land.

This includes a public feedback form where residents can answer questions about the proposals.

One resident pointed out that the first question in the feedback form asks which type of houses people think would be most suitable for the site, without an option for 'no housing'.

Councillor Rachel Bresnahan said she learned about the plans on Friday evening when an email landed in her inbox, and explained that she was 'genuinely shocked' to see the proposals.

She added: "I knew this day would come but I was devastated to see the proposal included the destruction and relocation of the local park, which was built by our local community.

"They have promised new park facilities but these would be set back, away from homes and on the other side of the new access road, therefore this proposal would remove safe access to the free local facilities for our young people.

"My list of concerns is long but I have yet to discuss these with the developers.

"There are questions that must be answered regarding the impact on local infrastructure, the strain on local facilities for future and current residents, the impact on the local nature and green spaces and of course the safety and wellbeing of our local children."

For its part, Seddon Homes said on its website that the plans would be for a 'sensitive landscape-led development' on the land with 'new areas of open space and walking and cycling links.'

The website added: 'The final number of dwellings has yet to be determined due to the ongoing technical, environmental and masterplanning work which has yet to be completed, as well as obtaining feedback from the local community.'

Seddon Homes was approached for comment.
