Plan to build more than 100 new homes on ‘unused’ Stockport Grammar School fields
A developer has shared plans to build more than 100 new homes on "unused" playing fields owned by Stockport Grammar School.
The selling of land on Dialstone Lane in Offerton, between Brooklyn Road and Hornbeam Close, could see the site become 112 new "high quality homes", 50 percent of which would be designated as affordable.
The plans include dedicated open spaces for the public as well as play areas. The fields have not been used for more than seven years due to issues including "safeguarding challenges and a lack of facilities".
Story Homes believes the proposal would reduce pressure on Stockport's green belt by making use of the site.
Jonathan Lee, chair of governors at Stockport Grammar School, said: "After careful and comprehensive evaluation, Stockport Grammar School has decided to release this land for residential development which will provide benefits for both the school and the local community.
"The proceeds from this transaction will significantly increase the school's bursary program, thereby expanding educational opportunities for local children. Additionally, a substantial portion of the funds generated will be invested in enhancing and upgrading the school's existing facilities.
"If development proceeds, the site could make a significant contribution to Stockport's supply of both market and affordable housing as well as alleviate pressure on Stockport's Green Belt."
Martin Nugent, head of land and planning at Story Homes, said: "We are truly excited to introduce our vision for the Dialstone Lane fields site in Offerton. At Story Homes, we believe in creating more than just houses, we are committed to creating vibrant and sustainable communities.
"With our proposal for 112 high-quality homes, including a strong emphasis on affordable housing and public open spaces, we aim to make a lasting positive impact on Stockport. We look forward to engaging with the local community and working together to bring this vision to life."
A consultation on the plans will be open until Monday, February 5 to enable the local community to see the proposals and provide feedback.
This consultation includes two drop-in sessions:
- Monday, January 22 (Dialstone Lane Methodist Church, 161 Dialstone Lane, Stockport, SK2 7LQ) – 4pm to 7pm
- Wednesday, January 24 (Alma Hotel Lodge, 149 Buxton Road, Stockport, SK2 6EL) – 11.30am to 2.30pm.
There is also an opportunity to review and comment on the proposals via the consultation website.
