A new glaucoma service is now available in Stockport after its trial was a success.
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS), which combines glaucoma treatment with cataract surgery, offers patients a less invasive alternative to traditional glaucoma surgery methods - and a faster recovery time.
Specialist ophthalmology clinic CHEC Stockport is one of nine extra sites now offering MIGS across the nation.
MIGS is recommended for people with mild to moderate glaucoma as it minimises optical nerve damage and vision loss.
Erin Broad, Hospital manager at CHEC Stockport, was 'pleased' to introduce the new system. She said it will "improve patient choice, treatment outcomes and quality of life."
She added: "MIGS provides a crucial solution to help prevent the progression of glaucoma and in turn, save the health of the optic nerve.
"It also has the potential to simplify postoperative care – as the eye's natural drainage system is restored so quickly after surgery – and reduce the need for glaucoma eye drops."
Glaucoma patients who would like to know more about the MIGS service can speak to their optometrist or GP or contact [email protected].
