Work has started on building a new fire station in Stockport which is set to finish in autumn next year.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said spades are in the ground at the King Street West site near Stockport town centre, which is being rebuilt as part of a £51m investment to open three new sites around Greater Manchester.

Upgrades to two other stations are on the way in the region, with a new fire station in Blackley set to be up and running in late November, and one in Whitefield in autumn 2026.

Demolition at the former Stockport fire station started in August, since then firefighters have been working from neighbouring Whitehill Community Fire Station.

The new station in Stockport will get a new name, being known going forward as 'Stockport Central Community Fire Station'.

An event was held on October 28 to mark the start of the work.

Kate Green, Greater Manchester's deputy mayor in charge of community safety, said: "This investment in our estate is creating new facilities that the community can benefit from and be proud of.

"It is vitally important that there is no reduction in fire cover for Stockport during this rebuild, so it's great that crews have been accommodated and able to carry out their duties from nearby Whitehill.

"Modernising our estate is a key part of our fire plan, ensuring it is fit for purpose and meets the needs of our workforce and the public."

Sarah Nattrass, GMFRS assistant chief fire officer, added: "It's great to see construction on our third new-build community fire station getting underway. These new fire stations will provide a positive and engaging presence in their local communities while giving our staff the modern facilities they deserve.

"I am proud of all the work that has gone into our estates programme, building an estate that is fit for a modern Greater Manchester."

Stockport council leader Mark Roberts attended the event on October 28, and Stockport councillor Christine Carrigan who represents the Brinnington and Stockport Central ward.

Cllr Roberts said: "It's fantastic to see work beginning on this new community fire station here in Stockport. This development is an important investment in our town's future and in the safety of local people.

"The new station will not only support our firefighters in the vital work they do, but will also stand as a visible sign of partnership between local services and our community – helping to make Stockport an even safer and stronger place for everyone."

Cllr Carrigan said her father worked at the fire station from 1967 until retirement in 1988, and went on to become chairman of Greater Manchester Fire Authority.

She said: "I was honoured to be invited to attend the spade-in-the-ground event this morning which was an emotional moment for me given my dad's history at the station, but a hugely significant moment for the borough as we will soon have our new state of the art fire station and I am proud to be a small part of that, and to continue my dad's legacy of helping to keep the community safe."
