A new building at Stepping Hill Hospital is in the running for a national award.

The urgent care centre, which was completed in 2025, has been shortlisted for a Construction News (CN) Award, in the 'Project of the Year (£20m–£50m) category.

The CN awards aim to celebrate construction projects which display a high standard of work and provide good client satisfaction.

Since its completion in 2025, the new urgent care centre has "helped to greatly improve emergency care provision for the community", Stockport NHS said.

The building features new assessment, treatment and consultation areas for key emergency services. This includes the children's emergency department, mental health, and medical same day emergency care.

The construction process itself is also being recognised - 88 percent of the workforce was locally sourced, and 718 apprentice training weeks were completed during the building process.

Further still, the project promoted sustainability by using an electric plant and replacing diesel with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), reducing emissions by 59 percent.

Michelle Waddicor, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Head of Capital Projects said: "The emergency and urgent care campus construction project with Tilbury Douglas was a major undertaking, with hard work from many individuals over several years; a real example of a great team effort.

"We're delighted that the success of this project has been recognised by being shortlisted for a Construction News Award, and are looking forward to competing with some of the best building projects across the country."

The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony which takes place on 9 July 2026 at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.
