Work on two new shops and 18 new apartments will start in Stockport Underbanks this summer.

The development will be based on Coopers Brow, with the apartments based above the shop spaces.

The area has already received a series of improvements, with new street art, and a biodiverse 'green roof'.

And under similar rejuvenation plans, Russell Morley House will also be demolished to prepare the site for future redevelopment.

It's the latest in a string of upgrades to the Underbanks, which Stockport Council describes as "one of the most significant periods of positive change seen in generations".

The improvements in the area over the last six years have been backed by investment from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Stockport Council and a wide range of local partners and developers.

Cllr Micheala Meikle, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said: "The Underbanks has been completely transformed over the last six years.

"Historic buildings have been restored, new homes have brought life back to the heart of the town, and independent businesses are thriving like never before.

"This isn't just a regeneration of bricks and mortar, it's a renewal of confidence, creativity, and community in Stockport.

"Above all, it's a testament to the independent community who have helped bring the Underbanks to life.

"The Underbanks is now a shining example of what can be achieved when heritage, ambition, and local partnership come together, and it lays a strong foundation for the town centre's future."

If you'd like to have a say in the future of the Underbanks, there's still one day left to give your views in the council's public survey on the matter. The consultation closes on Tuesday 31 March.
