German ambassador presented with 'new Berlin' artwork in Stockport visit
By Alasdair Perry 30th Mar 2026
Germany's ambassador to the UK visited our very own 'new Berlin' as part of a visit to the North West this month.
Ambassador Susanne Baumann called at Stockport during the tour, meeting with council leader Mark Roberts.
In the visit, she was presented with a print of the Stockport: Das Neue Berlin artwork, made by artist Eric Jackson.
Unfortunately, in what the artist describes as his 'Spinal Tap' moment, Ambassador Baumann was presented with a greetings card print as the larger framed A4 didn't make it in time.
Nonetheless, the gift obviously made a lasting impression, as the ambassador subsequently posted a picture of it on social media, saying: "What Stockport Council Leader Mark Roberts told me: Stockport is the new Berlin!"
The German ambassador, normally based out of Belgrave Square in London, also visited some of Manchester's universities and spoke with Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham on the trip.
Ambassador Baumann described it as "A great visit to this vibrant part of the UK".
"We will continue to strengthen the ties between Germany and the UK as we implement the Kensington Treaty", she said. "This includes ties at a local and regional level!"
The Kensington Treaty is a joint declaration of friendship and co-operation between the UK and Germany.
"Many thanks to Greater Manchester for hosting me!", she added.
Artist Eric Jackson specialises in modern retro poster art, and has produced pieces celebrating Marple, Levenshulme, Withington and more, as well as just Stockport.
