A new restaurant specialising in Japanese and Filipino cuisine has opened in Cheadle.

Toyo, based at 44 High Street, has been welcoming customers for the last few weeks and has already become a huge hit.

With a delicious blend of both classic and newer flavours, Toyo aims to bring something which is at once delicious and comforting, while also being novel and fascinating.

You can expect favourites such as Katsu curry, teriyaki and bao alongside flavours which might be more unfamiliar (but no less delicious); think ube, sisig, pancit, and more.

And all of it prepared by an incredibly dedicated team with decades of culinary experience between them.

"We just want to bring something new that people might not have tried before", they said.

"Asian cuisine is huge around Manchester, but it's not often that you see Filipino cuisine specifically."

They also pointed out the diversity of Filipino cuisine; head chef Emrah described it as a combination of all the best aspects of cuisine across East Asia.

But the reality of it is that this food needs to be tried for itself.

Still, if you're not at liberty to visit over the next few days, we at Nub News were lucky enough to try some of the delicious dishes on offer at Toyo...

The taste test

Dishes here are made fresh to order, with the team putting in a lot of work to make sure all dishes are perfect.

First up was Kare-Kare, a favourite of diners and for good reason.

Kare-Kare is a traditional Filipino stew in a creamy peanut sauce. The sauce was incredible, as well as the pumpkin it was served with. The restaurant works hard to accommodate any dietary requirements, including gluten-free and halal.

We also tried the sizzling Sisig. Sisig is a popular savoury Filipino dish traditionally served with pork, yet can be adjusted to accommodate vegetarians. The dish was packed full of flavour and had obviously been made with a lot of love.

The range of Japanese food on offer was similarly delicious.

Take the sushi - Toyo rolls this to order and has worked hard to train their chefs to be able to make great rolls. Flavor profiles are very important to the restaurant, with even the rice of the sushi being carefully practised and tasted to ensure the absolute best for the customer.

We had the spider Futomaki roll, which is a sushi roll served with soft-shell crab. The serving size, like all the servings at Toyo, were generous but not too large. Even down to the presentation and serving size, it is clear the team had put a lot of work into considering diners' experiences.

For dessert, we tried ice-cream and their Turon, which is banana fried in a spring roll, served best with their Ube ice cream. The Turon was nicely presented and was a warm, comforting dessert perfect to finish your meal off with.

Toyo's ice-cream is also made in house. They offer Matcha and ube ice cream.

Their matcha is made from Japanese green tea and has been carefully crafted to have the right amount of bitterness and sweetness.

Ube is made from purple yam, giving the ice cream an unusual purple colour. The flavour is so unique (and delicious) that there wouldn't be any way to describe it without trying it.

Toyo's owners told us how Ube and Matcha have become quite popular in recent times, with big chains offering products with their flavouring.

However, not all, they say, get the flavour right. The only downside of Toyo's desserts is that you will start to notice how large chains can't capture the natural, interesting flavours of these ingredients.

Toyo also offers ube-flavoured liquor and cocktails. They even do an ube twist on a pina colada.

Overall, it was clear that the Toyo staff cared deeply about the quality of their food, supporting local supply chains along the way.

Diners will be impressed by their range of culinary prowess and leave the restaurant with a new-found appreciation for Filipino food.

You can browse the menu, make a booking and more on the Toyo website here.
