A Bollywood-themed event has helped raise £1,572 for The Christie, the cancer research and care centre.

The event took place at Romiley Cricket Club on Saturday 22 February, and featured dancing, raffles, and an appearance from Cllr Suzanne Wyatt, Mayor of Stockport.

Almost 50 local businesses and countless local residents came together to help raise money, with all ticket sales going to charity.

Local businesses and residents also donated raffle prizes (including signed drumsticks from Blossoms drummer Joe Donovan) - indeed, there were so many that 43 raffles were held.

Sidrah Yasmin, a local businesswoman and owner of Sidrah's Kitchen, organised the event.

Inspired by some of her close friends and relatives dealing with cancer, she decided to host the party to raise money for the worthy cause of research and care for the disease.

"I wanted to do a party - something different for the community", Sidrah explained. "And I wanted to do something authentic, which is why I chose the Bollywood theme.

"Most of all I just wanted to say a massive, massive thank you to everyone.

"The generosity of friends, family, and the local business community in Romiley has been absolutely amazing.

"It was just absolutely fantastic. We're all so happy with how it turned out."

Sidrah herself also provided delicious food and drink for the event, complemented by live drummers and a DJ who played music throughout the night.

Event promoter Jamie also thanked the attendees and Romiley businesses who helped support the event, and also the Mayor of Stockport who gave a speech on the night.

Jamie said on social media: "Everybody is a winner at these things.

"It's so heartwarming to see the community coming together, once again as we always do in and around the Romiley area.

"Thank you for helping create the positive and supportive atmosphere last night to everybody that attended."

The Christie is a cancer research and care centre based in Didsbury. It's the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, and treats around 60,000 patients each year.
