Local business Vernon Building Society will celebrate its 100-year anniversary this year.
The building society was founded on March 27 1924, and has outlasted the 12 other building societies which were around in Stockport at that time.
The ensuing 100 years have seen 19 Prime Ministers, and the formation of 112 new countries.
As part of its centenary celebrations, colleagues at Vernon have enlisted the help of a historian to find out more about the company's heritage; from helping WWII veterans to buy their own home post-1945, to surviving the 2008 global financial crisis.
Speaking of this important anniversary, Vernon CEO Steve Fletcher said: "Stockport was a very different place in 1924, but a century later Vernon is still thriving as a mutual building society.
"Over the past 100 years we've helped our Members buy houses, save for their futures, financially survive recessions, wars and a pandemic.
"We've also played a pivotal role in making Stockport the great place that it is today, and I couldn't be prouder to be leading the Society into a new future.
"Looking ahead we will still be driven by the values created 100 years ago and continue to care about what really matters."
Further still, to mark the centenary, Vernon has launched its own charitable foundation. £100,000 in funds will be distributed to local charities and grassroots organisations in grants of up to £5,000.
The foundation is now open for applications - the deadline is March 28 2024.
If you run a local charity or community organisation and want to apply for a grant, you can do so HERE.
