Local sports coaching heroes ‘honoured’ in visit to Downing Street
The efforts of two local sporting heroes were recognised in a visit to Downing Street this month.
Andy Lord and Philip Wright were invited to No. 10 by Paul Athans, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Hazel Grove, as part of a 'bringing communities together through sport' reception.
Andy supports a local charity that provides trainers to disadvantaged teenagers and young adults who might not be able to afford them.
His aim is to "nurture young people who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness and help them reach their full potential".
Philip, meanwhile, has been involved with Rose Hill Junior Football Club for more than 20 years. He started as a team coach and has since become Chairman.
The club has 18 competing teams across several age categories. It was founded in the early 1990s to give local children a chance to play football competitively.
Speaking of the pair's work, Mr Athans said: "Grassroots sport brings communities together and helps keep us fit and healthy both physically and mentally.
"I was overjoyed to be able to invite two local champions to No. 10 Downing Street to thank them personally for all they do for our area."
Also at the reception was Lucy Frazer, secretary of state for culture, media and sport.
Ms Frazer said Andy and Philip were 'champions of community sport'.
"Sport is for everyone", she said. "It enriches our communities and improves lives right across the country.
"It was a real pleasure to celebrate [Andy and Philip's] work alongside Paul Athans."
