Local artists and creatives in Stockport could lend a helping hand in the opening phases of Stockroom (Stockport's new library and cultural space).

Stockport Council is making grants available for artists and performers to put their stamp on the building - this could be funding for performances in the new events space, or for art projects for the building as a whole.

The 'Creative Commissions' scheme, for example, will fund projects such as murals and window installations. The grant is aimed at artists with a personal or professional connection to Stockport.

The 'Kick Start', meanwhile, offers funding for events, which could include music performances, comedy, festivals, and more, with a view to showcasing local talent.

The plan is for artists and performers to work with residents when devising their projects.

Stockroom is due to open in Spring 2025.

The centre will include a library, creative spaces, a café bar, and a living room surrounded by a wall of books – the idea is to create somewhere warm and welcoming where people go to meet others or just escape the busy streets.

Cllr Frankie Singleton, Cabinet Member for Communities, Culture and Sport at Stockport Council, said: "Stockroom is all about the community, and we want to create this space with the people of Stockport.

"We're excited to offer these grants and get local people involved in creating art and also delivering events that will engage and inspire the town. I can't wait for Stockroom to open next year and show everyone what it's all about."
