The national picture:

Across the UK, there has been a sharp drop in the percentage of A-A* grades. This year saw 27.2% of all grades marked at A* or A, a massive drop from 2022, where the figure was 44.8%.

The A*-E pass rate is 97.3%. This is the lowest level nationally since 2008.

The BBC reports: "It's part of a plan to bring grades back down in line with pre-pandemic levels, after sharp rises in 2020 and 2021 when exams were cancelled and results were based on teachers' assessments."

UCAS reports that 79% of those receiving results gained a place at their first-choice university.

Councillor Wendy Meikle, cabinet member for children, families and education, said: "Congratulations to all Stockport students receiving their A-level and GCSE results over the next few weeks.

"You have all worked so hard and should be very proud of your achievements. For those students who didn't get the results you were hoping for, don't panic - there are many options and lots of support available in Stockport.

"And I'm sure all parents, carers and teachers will join me in celebrating our young people and their achievements."
