Councillor David Meller, leader of the council Labour group, yesterday announced his priorities for the coming year.

Cllr Meller began by saying that the absence of any Conservative members of the council was an 'incredible opportunity' to have what he described as progressive policy.

The councillor then outlined his priorities, which included more affordable housing and greater investment for neighbourhood centres, as well as - in his own words - 'basics', such as timely bin collection and road resurfacing where necessary.

Announcing his first priority, Cllr Meller said: "I want to ensure that we can continue to build more social and affordable homes."

He also added: "I want to ensure that your neighbourhood centres get the investment that they need."

Acknowledging the cost of living crisis, Cllr Meller maintained that the council should continue to get the aforementioned 'basics' right.

The councillor ended by encouraging residents to outline their own priorities in the post on Twitter
