Big new plans have been announced to expand cycling and walking in Stockport town centre and beyond.

The council is aiming to create a 'connected network of walking and cycling routes' to key locations such as Stockport train station, Hollywood Park, Castle Street, Stockport College, and Edgeley Park football stadium.

Active travel links are also planned beyond the town centre to Alexandra Park, Davenport, and Adswood.

It comes ahead of a £350m project to build a new neighbourhood known as Stockport 8 in the western part of the town centre, with up to 1,300 homes.

Cllr Grace Baynham, the council's cabinet member for parks, highways and transport services, said: "Stockport's Town Centre West developments have been designed with sustainability at their heart – creating a place where people can live, work and visit with an expectation that most journeys will be made by train, bus, walking or cycling.

"To help make this possible, we are consulting on plans to create a connected network of walking and cycling routes across the Town Centre West area, including Edgeley.

"These routes, which will connect to our existing Bee Network routes in the area, will link new and existing developments with key destinations such as Stockport Interchange and Station, Stockport College, local parks, residential areas and the wider town centre.

"The proposals are part of the council's ongoing commitment to building a cleaner, healthier and more accessible town centre for everyone."

Proposed works include an active travel corridor in Edgeley, linking the Trans-Pennine Trail and Stockport Interchange to Stockport train station, Stockport College, Castle Street and Edgeley Park with segregated walking and cycling routes and new signal crossings.

Better access to and through Hollywood Park is planned via junction and path improvements, including works to the path from Wood Street to Ealing Road.

Travel links between Cheadle Heath and Adswood are also being put forward.

This would focus on the Stockholm Road / Adswood Road Junction, connecting residential streets in the first CYCLOPS (Cycle Optimised Protected Signals) junction in Stockport with off-carriageway cycling facilities from Adswood to Davenport.

Improved access to Alexandra Park is planned via junction improvements and crossing improvements at Dale Street, with upgrades to the Reservoir Road Path.

Stockport council has launched a public consultation on the new plans, where members of the public can share their views on the proposed changes.

Wider works taking place in the borough include the replacement of the Greek Street bridge by Network Rail.

This will include upgrading the existing pedestrian crossing on Greek Street to a Toucan (shared pedestrian and cyclist) crossing.

The Greek Street roundabout will be reinstated with Zebra crossings on Shaw Heath north and south of the roundabout, and also on the Greek Street arm.

There's a new layout on the way for the Wellington Road South / Railway Road junction outside the town hall, with improved pedestrian crossings, separate cycle crossings, and widening Railway Road to improve traffic flow.
