A historic steam train will be calling at Stockport railway station this March.

On Saturday 14 March, The Buxton Spa Expresss will steam from Manchester and through Stockport, finishing up at Buxton.

Pulled by an LMS Stanier class Black 5 No. 45407 locomotive, it will give passengers and spectators alike the chance to relive some historic glamour from the golden age of steam.

The train starts diesel-hauled at Preston, and passes through Wigan before it gets to Manchester Victoria, where it will pick up passengers and change to a steam locomotive.

The train sets off from Manchester Victoria at 9am, taking a roundabout route via Bolton (9.30am) and Blackburn (9.55am), before picking up passengers at Stockport at 11am.

It will then wend its way south-west, through Woodsmoor and Hazel Grove (although it won't stop here), and across the picturesque Derbyshire countryside before finishing up at Buxton around 1.30pm.

After giving passengers the chance for a sojourn in the quaint spa town, the train will leave Buxton at 3.30pm, taking the LNWR route through Whaley Bridge to Stockport, with a water stop at Denton to replenish supplies.

The Railway Touring Company, which is managing the tour, promised an 'unforgettable' trip.

"Join us for a contrasting main line steam run from Preston and the North West to the Peak District of Derbyshire and the spa town of Buxton", they said.

"We will travel via the West Coast Main Line to Wigan, and then Manchester, before tackling the iconic Copy Pit line and then through to Peak Forest via Chinley. A tour of Pennine grandeur and Derbyshire peaks with the afternoon in the spa town of Buxton."

Tickets start at £115 for an adult in standard class.

Premier class tickets, which include a full English breakfast and four-course dinner, start from £329 for adults.

Please note that only standard class passengers can board at Stockport! Premier class will have to board elsewhere.
