Stockport Council is hosting a survey to help shape the future of Stockport's neighbourhoods.

The responses will inform the development of a Stockport 'design code'.

The design code is described by the council as "a set of principles and rules for new development to help create better and more sustainable places and neighbourhoods".

In other words, it's a series of rules which developers and architects will have a 'clear expectation' to follow in future projects.

Participants in Stockport will be asked what they would like to see in spaces and places around the borough to help develop these rules. Specifically, it relates to things like street character, building heights, and the design of public spaces.

The council has already outlined its plans for increasing density in urban areas, which aims to reduce encroachment on green space.

Stockport is one of 10 local authorities across the country which have been selected by the government to come up with these design codes. Stockport Council and the other nine authorities will act as 'pathfinders' in producing these codes, which may influence the introduction of other codes across the country.

The council will also be receiving £120,000 from the government to support the production of the design code.

The consultation is open until Friday 21 February. Give your feedback here.

A Stockport Council spokesperson said: "We will produce a design code that is specific to the issues we have in Stockport.

"The focus of our design code is to empower local communities to set standards that they expect all new development to meet. This consultation is the first stage in meeting that aim.

"We want to make sure that the code addresses the things which are important to local people. We want anyone who lives, works, visits or studies in Stockport to get involved."

Councillor Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council added: "We are very pleased to have been selected to take part in the Design Code Pathfinder Programme. We are committed to making sure that new development is of quality and character to create sustainable and liveable places.

"A new design code, that is embedded with the ambitions of our local residents, will help to ensure that this commitment is achieved."
