Hundreds of new flats will be built in Stockport with an £8 million funding boost announced today (29 September).

The Royal George Village project will receive money for 442 residences with car parking as well as offices and a start-up space in the town centre on a three-acre site between Greek Street and Wellington Road South.

It involves converting the 115,000ft Torkington Building into 122 flats, and demolishing the Lyme Centre to make way for a 258-home apartment block.

The grade II listed Greek Street Building, the former Metropolitan Girls' School, will be converted into collaborative co-working space for local businesses, and a new-build gateway building constructed providing 62 apartments at the corner of Greek Street and Royal George Street.

The work is being led by CityHeart after previous developer Investar collapsed.

Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) is leading the regeneration of the town centre and plans to build 4,000 homes over the next 10 years.

The MDC was set up in 2019 and tasked with sorting the redevelopment of the town. It is also behind the Stockport Interchange transformation which aims to create a modern transport hub alongside new homes and leisure space in the heart of the town by spring 2024.

Stockport is the only Greater Manchester borough not part of the Places for Everyone scheme, a plan across Greater Manchester to boost homes and jobs in the region.

Cllr Mark Hunter, leader of Stockport Council, said: "This is another significant milestone for Stockport MDC. The funding will allow many more much-needed homes to be brought forward quickly as the next phase of the work in Town Centre West."

Other projects around Greater Manchester to receive funding today include £3m for Lumina Village in Trafford, £1.3m for the former Newton Bank Printworks in Tameside, and £750k for the Greenbooth Road project in Norden, Rochdale.

CityHeart was contacted for comment.
