A giant tractor convey featuring more than 100 vehicles will pass through Bramhall and Marple this Christmas.

It's part of a fundraiser for cancer care and research - drivers and supporters will be raising money for The Christie, the cancer centre based near Didsbury.

At 11am on Sunday 29 December, the convoy will set off from Hill Top Farm in Woodford, passing through Bramhall, Marple, New Mills, Hayfield, and Disley. The event finishes at around 5.30pm at Middlewood Road, where there will be a celebration featuring food and drink.

The convoy is organised by 24-year-old agricultural contractor Ferguson Roylance, and it's not the first time that he's hosted such an event. It started in 2020, when his friend and farming colleague Harvey Mitchell sadly passed away from cancer.

Ferguson looked for a way to honour his friend, and to raise money for The Christie which had cared for Harvey throughout his illness. And, given that this was 2020, the fundraiser had to be socially-distanced.

And so, the tractor convoy began.

The following year another friend of the farming community Lisa Messenger died, so the fundraising tractor convoy was repeated to honour her as well. The convoy is also in memory of Stuart Wainwright, who died in a farming accident in 2023.

Money is raised by drivers (who pay to take part), and by supporters who can donate to the fundraiser.

"My aim initially was to give people a chance to say goodbye to Harvey while raising money for the hospital that looked after him," Ferguson said.

"I'm not experienced in organising events, but it turned out to be a huge success – hundreds of people stood along the roads, socially distanced, to watch and wave as we passed by with our tractors.

"It was a heartfelt way to honour Harvey's memory and support essential care for cancer patients and their families."
