Generosity of Stockport residents provides £100,000 of gifts to less fortunate children
Less fortunate children across the borough have received Christmas gifts thanks to the generosity of Stockport's residents.
Over £100,000 of presents were donated by locals, through the Giving Tree project.
The project was simple: a Christmas tree in Merseyway Shopping Centre was set up, with tags containing present requests from children across the borough.
Different tags were taken down by members of the public, who went to buy the item and dropped it off at a designated collection point, after which the gifts were distributed to the people they were intended for.
Gifts included games, toys, books and clothes - this year's Giving Tree supported 14 primary schools across Stockport, local homeless shelters, local youth groups, women in refuge and local charities such as Chelwood Foodbank Plus and Emmie's Kitchen.
A Merseyway spokesperson said this year's Giving Tree project was the most successful to date, with thousands taking part.
Victoria Nichol, Merseyway Centre Manager said: "The Giving Tree is a testament to the incredible spirit of our community here in Stockport.
"From our centre management team to the dedicated volunteers, the shoppers who purchase the gifts and the organisations who help collect and deliver the presents - it's a seamless effort built on compassion and generosity.
"Together, we're ensuring that no child in our community wakes up without a gift on Christmas morning. It's heartwarming to see how many lives we can touch when we all work together to spread joy during the festive season."
