It's May - the weather is warm and balmy, the countryside is turning green and verdant, and it's also National Walking Month.

To celebrate, there will be lots of free group-led walks across Stockport and beyond throughout May.

The best way to find times and locations that work for you is to visit https://gmwalking.co.uk/festival-routes/ and browse what's on.

Some of the choices include:

  • Social strolls run by Life Leisure and Age UK. These gentle walks are perfect for having a chat, keeping fit, and seeing what's outside your door.
  • Circular walks in local nature spots, hosted by Walkaday
  • Indoor confidence walks; ideal for beginners or those with long-term health conditions. These are available in Avondale, Bramhall, and Brinnington.
  • A special Walking Festival group to Kinder Scout; join the group on May 18 at 10am, departing from Edale Train Station, led by trained walk leaders. This is a more challenging hike.

Or, if you fancy some time to yourself, National Walking Month gives you as good an excuse as any to lace up your walking shoes and take to the paths and bridleways by yourself.

There's plenty of spots around Stockport: the River Mersey, the Peak Forest Canal, Reddish Vale, and the Fallowfield Loop are just a few examples.

Stockport resident Janet El-Mikatti has already been benefitting from regular strolls. Sharing her experience, she said: "I really enjoy the Saturday Wellness Walk with the Life Leisure and Age Concern team.

"I was a little nervous to join because it had been a while since I had done any longer walks, but everyone was welcoming and encouraging. It is such a friendly and mixed group of people that there is always someone to chat to and learn new things.

"I have also found new areas to walk in, I would encourage anyone to give it a go."

Cllr Keith Holloway - Stockport Council's cabinet member for health - said: "This May, we're celebrating the joy of walking across Stockport and beyond, an opportunity for everyone, no matter your age or ability, to get moving, lift your spirits, and enjoy the great outdoors.

"The Walking Festival offers the opportunity for connection, wellbeing, and coming together as a community."
