Stockport has been issued with a flood alert and a yellow weather warning following heavy rain over the weekend.

The flood alert, issued by the Environment Agency, means that flooding is 'possible' in parts of the River Mersey catchment area due to rising river levels.

The alert is expected to be updated by 10am on Tuesday 16 December.

The Met Office has similarly issued a yellow weather warning for Stockport, meaning that some flooding, damage to buildings, power cuts, and travel disruption are all possible.

This could include road closures and public transport cancellations - the Met Office has advised passengers to check before setting out.

The Met Office's yellow warning will remain in place until 11.59pm today (Monday 15 December).

Those areas which are most likely to be affected by flooding include low-lying areas are the Micker, Cringle, Sinderland and Poynton Brooks (and their tributaries).

The Environment Agency is continuing to monitor rainfall and river levels.

Residents are advised to avoid using low-lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses.
