The first phase of engineering works on the Greek Street / Armoury Roundabout bridge have been completed.

Engineers from Network Rail started work on 31 March, in a project which is expected to last until March next year.

The work involves the dismantling of the existing Greek Street bridge and construction of a new bridge.

Milestones reached so far include the removal of concrete blocks under the bridge, the demolition of the bridge walls, and test drilling to prepare the way for the new bridge.

The railway under the bridge was closed entirely to trains over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Trains are now running through Stockport again as of Tuesday 22 March, but the roundabout will remain closed until 2026.

It will remain open to pedestrians in some places.

A number of diversion routes are in place along the A6, Edgeley Road and Stockport Road to try and reduce disruption while the work takes place.

Patrick Vallely, Network Rail's head of buildings and civils, said: "This is a hugely complicated project for both road and rail – with one of Stockport's key traffic roundabouts sitting above one of the busiest railway junctions in Greater Manchester.

"Our teams worked night and day over Easter and made great progress for future phases of the bridge rebuild, while making sure the railway reopened on time for passengers.

"We couldn't have done this work without closing the road and railway, and I'd like to thank anyone whose travel plans were impacted by our major work over Easter for their patience.

"This is all part of our multi-million-pound 'Strengthening Stockport' investment to improve this critical infrastructure for decades to come."
